SOLAR WATCHES

SOLAR WATCHES

A Solar Watch is a watch which works by converting light energy into electrical energy. Light energy received on the dial is converted into electrical energy by the solar cell under the dial; the energy is stored in the rechargeable battery and it is used to power the watch. Unlike a disposable battery such as a dry battery or button battery, a rechargeable battery is an eco-friendly battery. It can be used for a long period of time by recharging and discharging the energy repeatedly

A solar watch needs regular exposure to a bright light source to maintain the charge. Bright sunlight is the best light to charge the watch most efficiently. The brightness of strong sunlight is about 10 times more than on a cloudy day, and about 140 times more than the indoor lights. So place your watch in the sunlight for better results.

A solar watch is able to work for a long time when sufficiently charged, but when it is not worn please place it in light with the dial facing towards the sun. Recharge solar watches regularly near the window sill with sunlight for sufficient recharging.

A solar watch cannot be recharged where there is little light.  If the watch is stored in a drawer or any place away from a light source for a long time, the watch won’t get recharged. Similarly, if your watch is on your wrist but is concealed under a sleeve, it won’t get sufficient light for getting recharged.

Precautions for charging:

Do not leave your watch directly in the sunlight or in places with high temperatures over +60 °C for a long period of time, this may damage watch parts or cause malfunction. Placing the watch for charging on the dash board of a car or under an Incandescent lamp would damage the watch seriously. Besides, avoid exposing the watch for recharging during peak summer time when the temperature is very high.

Low Energy Warning Function:

In a Seiko solar powered watch, the movement and position of the second hand shows the energy level of the watch.  When the second hand jumps in 2-second intervals or 5-second intervals, it is a sign that the energy stored in the rechargeable battery is reduced to an extremely low level. When this occurs, some of the watch functions and calendar function may stop working, and the button and the crown do not work. Please recharge the watch until the second hand moves at 1-second intervals before it stops completely.

Power save function

(Type of watch: Solar watch, GPS Solar watch)

When the watch is left uncharged for a certain period of time, the hands automatically stop moving to minimize energy consumption. When the second hand stops at the 15-second position or 45-second position, it is a sign that the power save function has been activated. When this occurs, the hour and the minute hands also stop. Ensure to expose your watch in the light for charging without fail.

Stop at 15-second position: Without receiving sufficient energy for over 72 hours

Stop at 45-second position: When it is in an insufficient charging state for a long period of time

Performance of a rechargeable battery:

The capacity and charging efficiency of a rechargeable battery may decrease by long-term use and usage environment. Such degradation will reduce the power holding capacity of the battery. When the performance starts to decrease, this is an indication that the watch requires inspection/repair.

If a watch is used for a long period of time, the current consumption may increase caused by deterioration of the lubricating oil or rechargeable battery, dirt or wear of interior parts. In order to maintain your watch in good condition, a periodic overhaul is recommended once every three years.

Daily care

Solar watches do not need a periodical battery replacement, however your watch is in constant contact with your skin; moisture, sweat and accumulation of dirt can damage your watch. Please wipe off the watch carefully with a soft cloth or turn the crown without pulling it out from time to time to prevent rust and corrosion
